Bus Driver, another king of the street!

Will people support the Jakarta administration’s policy to limit the use of private vehicles? Will people shift to public transportation, say like Kopaja or Metromini? Chairman of PT Koperasi Angkutan Jakarta (Kopaja), Nanang Basuki, said that the company started to improve services last year in order to attract motorists.

Based on a survey regarding passenger satisfaction, they were mostly satisfied with the service but not with the bus’ travel times (The Jakarta Post). A new transport system is recently introduced: the integrated bus network (APTB) feeder system. In the system, the APTB buses are allowed to get in the Transjakarta Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) exclusive lane and share bus stops. In the near future, the city administration could include public minibuses such as Kopaja and Metromini in the APTB.

Well, just wait and see. So far that we know here, Bus Drivers mainly of Kopaja and Metro mini are governors of the street and their conductors are the bravehearts to create a great stunt show on the street by blocking other vehicles for passengers. Don't get offended when they innocently bluff you for slowing down their operation or transferring you to another bus due to a traffic jam's problem or just want to turn back to get more passengers.

"It's jakarta, man!" My cynical friend likes this yell.

Jakarta traffic jam! Just enjoy it.

Go, go, go, be the fastest! You're mobile, much work to do today. It's Jakarta, you know what to do with life. You are accustomed to such a condition. You must survive! My cynical friend once yelled at me, "Ini Jakarta, bung!"

Home! Thanks God, you're save. There are hundred thousands of speed demons you have to outdo every working day, that's not a big deal, it is? And while you're having dinner and watching TV at home later on, the noisy and hectic trips have been going out there.

Your life depends on the speed on the road. You know the traffic jams which often continue through the day and distress you. For an extreme case, traveling even short distances can take hours and some parts of the city are in a constant state of jam.

Riding motorcycle might be much better than taking public transports which are popularly poor and worn out, even recent initiatives such as a trans-Jakarta bus lane are inefficient and even contribute to the problem by clogging intersections and reducing road space while moving comparatively small numbers of people.

Keep speeding ....

Thamrin Street at night

Jakarta downtown at night. This picture was taken from Thamrin street and I am one of the commuters who likes Michael Learns to Rock's song: I'm an actor, I'm a star and I don't even have my own car. That's just to describe that I am not as lucky as those doing their best and making achievement in Jakarta. Thamrin is one of the famous thoroughfares in Jakarta with the modern section around. The main unsolved problems here is how to make it free from traffic jams. However, what can the authorities do about it? Most of them are part of the urban too, coming to Jakarta and jam the street. Stressful and exhausted, welcome to our routine.
